Elbert Hubbard was an American writer, publisher, and philosopher, born in 1856. He played a significant role in the Arts and Crafts Movement and founded the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York. Hubbard is best known for his essay “A Message to Garcia” and for his work in establishing a distinctive American style of arts and crafts. His writings often combined elements of inspiration, self-help, and straightforward philosophy. Hubbard and his wife, Alice, tragically died in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915.
